A police constable was suspended and departmental inquiry was ordered after personnel from Karaya police station Kolkata allegedly beat up mediapersons looking at a elderly care facility on Broad Street on Tuesday morning. The incident followed the unnatural death of an patient with the nursing home.

Around 8.30am on Tuesday, an elderly patient was discovered dead at the elderly care. The person, Ardhendu Chakraborty (58), a resident of Jadavpur Kolkata, was admitted to the an elderly care facility on Monday with complaints of blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Probe said that Chakraborty has also been experiencing depression.
Prima facie, it's suicide, police said later. "The man possibly jumped over terrace from the an elderly care facility," said an officer.
A force from Karaya police station Kolkata attended the nursing home on buying a complaint but by then, nearly hundred local residents had crowded before the nursing home and a few of these allegedly turned violent and experimented with ransack the an elderly care facility. Police first closed the main entrance from the building and dispersed the mob. The mediapersons present on the spot alleged that trouble broke out just after that. Police allegedly attemptedto shove a journalist from the elderly care, which generated a hot altercation.
Prakash Sinha, a reporter from an audio-visual media, alleged that after he protested, the policemen first manhandled him. When some locals as well as other mediapersons attemptedto save him, the policemen allegedly turned more violent. They allegedly started abusing him and something with the policemen chased him having a baton. He allegedly pummelled Sinha badly at the same time he fell on the floor. Another policeman then snatched the baton coming from a colleague and attempted to take down Sinha again. With serious injuries, Sinha continues to be admitted to a private hospital.
Right after the incident, senior police were informed and following an initial inquiry depending on video clips, the policeman in plain clothes who take down Sinha among others along with his baton was defined as Kumar Chhetri, a unique constable of Karaya police station Kolkata. "He has been suspended," said joint commissioner (crime) Damayanti Sen. Sen also confirmed that the inquiry may be initiated.
The opposite policeman has been recognized as Suman Naskar, a sub-inspector. Police sources said S N Majumdar, officer in charge of Karaya police station, has become on leave and further OC Alok Banerjee is within charge.
The officers, however, claimed that they asked the media personnel to wait outside as vital clues at that moment has been destroyed due to the huge crowd. "We asked the crooks to wait outside in the interests of investigation," said a security officer who had been present at that moment. He however claimed that no person had asked Naskar or Chhetri to chase journalists with batons.

Sen said the divisional DCP and assistant commissioner Shanti Prosad Roy will submit separate inquiry reports. Roy was present on the spot during the incident.
